QNED LG QNED (QNED evo Mini LED)
Also known as: LG QNED, QNED evo, QNED Mini LED, Quantum Nano-Emitting Diode
QNED is LG's marketing name for its premium LCD TV line, in 2026 the QNED evo Mini LED series (QNED90 down to QNED70, up to 115 inches). These are LED-backlit LCDs with Mini LED local dimming, 120 Hz native panels and a claimed 100% color volume (DCI-P3), not self-emissive displays. The name echoes a research term, quantum nano-emitting diode, that LG's TVs do not use, and its color claim is DCI-P3 volume, narrower than BT.2020.
What QNED is
QNED is a brand, not a panel type. LG's 2026 page describes QNED as "LG's premium LCD TV lineup that delivers enhanced picture quality through Dynamic QNED Color." The 2026 QNED evo range uses Mini LED backlighting behind a 4K LCD, and LG's page labels the panel "4K QNED MiniLED" at 3,840 x 2,160. Man of Many's lineup coverage lists QNED90 as the flagship (including the 115-inch model), QNED85 and QNED82 as the mid-range, and QNED80 and QNED70 as entry level, with sizes up to 115 inches and 100-inch options.
The name has a history. DisplayDaily noted in 2021 that QNED originally means quantum nano-emitting diodes, LEDs made from gallium nitride nanorods that would be self-emissive, and that publisher Bob Raikes argued LG was "hi-jacking the expression" for a different stack of quantum dots, a Nanocell filter and a Mini LED backlight. Wikipedia's QLED article likewise classes LG's 2021 QNED Mini LED TVs as LCDs with mini LED backlighting, not self-emissive displays.
How the 2026 QNED evo works
The light source is a Mini LED backlight with local dimming. LG's QNED90 page names Precision Dimming Pro on the 85-inch and says dimming zone specifications "may vary by inches, models and region," so no single zone count applies. Man of Many reports Precision Dimming Ultra, with "thousands of Mini LED zones," on the flagship only. It describes the mid-range QNED85 and QNED82 as slightly less precise in dark-scene contrast, and the QNED80 and QNED70 as delivering the core Mini LED benefits without the higher-end processing and dimming. For the 2021 8K QNED99, DisplayDaily quoted LG at up to almost 30,000 LEDs, nearly 2,500 zones and a 1,000,000:1 contrast claim; those are 2021 flagship figures, not 2026 specs.
Color comes from "Dynamic QNED Color," which LG's 2026 page describes as "Nano-based wider color gamut technology replacing Quantum Dot." The spec sheet reads "100% Color Volume certified," with an Intertek footnote defining it as a color gamut volume equal to or exceeding that of DCI-P3. That is a narrower claim than Samsung's 100% BT.2020 VDE certification for Micro RGB, since BT.2020 (ITU-R BT.2020-2) is the wider target. See quantum-dot color conversion and color volume vs gamut for why these percentages are not comparable.
The panel runs at 120 Hz natively with VRR up to 144 Hz on the 85-inch QNED90 and AMD FreeSync Premium, and LG notes that 144 Hz "only works with games or PC inputs that support 144Hz." Man of Many reports VRR up to 165 Hz on the range, with processing up to 330 Hz that is not native. HDR formats listed are Dolby Vision, HDR10 and HLG, and the processor is the α8 AI Processor Gen 3.
The 2026 spec details come from LG's 85-inch QNED90 page. It lists a native 4K QNED MiniLED panel at 3,840 x 2,160, Dolby Vision, HDR10 and HLG, an HDR10 Pro mode with Dynamic Tone Mapping, and Dolby Vision for gaming at 4K 120 Hz. Man of Many adds AI Super Upscaling and Dynamic Tone Mapping Pro, availability starting in Korea, the US and Europe with Australia and other markets later in the year, and pricing marked "to come" at the time of writing. DisplayDaily's 2021 account of the original line counted 10 new 4K and 8K LCD models up to 86 inches, so the 115-inch 2026 flagship is a 29-inch step up from that top size.
QNED vs OLED
QNED is an LCD, so black level and contrast come from the dimming zones, not from per-pixel emission. Man of Many says LG is not trying to outdo OLED with this range and that it lacks OLED-level black. The trade is brightness and screen size at lower cost: the 2026 range tops out at 115 inches, while LG's G6 OLED tops out at 97 inches. On full-field brightness, Expert Reviews measured 500 cd/m² on the OLED G6 and eCoustics measured 642 to 790 nits on Samsung's R95H LCD. I found no measured data for the 2026 QNED models in the pages I loaded, so I give none. Wikipedia puts current OLED and LCD TVs at roughly 70 to 75% of Rec. 2020, so a 100% DCI-P3 volume claim says little about BT.2020 coverage. If the room is bright and the seat is far away, read the Mini LED vs OLED comparison, and use the viewing distance tool to check whether 100 inches or more fits.
QNED vs Neo QLED vs QLED
Samsung's Neo QLED is the closest competitor: both are Mini LED LCDs with local dimming. Samsung's version uses quantum dots (Samsung calls the LED set "Quantum Mini LED"), while LG now describes its color layer as replacing quantum dots with a nano-based technology. "QLED" itself is Samsung's name for LED-backlit LCDs with a quantum dot film, a brand it shared with Hisense and TCL after 2017, per Wikipedia. None of QNED, QLED or Neo QLED is the electroluminescent "true QLED" that Wikipedia says remains experimental.
Common confusions
"QNED" does not mean OLED. LG states a specific color-volume claim but no brightness figure in the pages I read. Model naming varies by region, with QNED90B, QNED85 and QNED82 appearing in different sources and some lists adding a QNED70, so confirm the exact SKU and its backlight type before buying. For the broader panel landscape see TV panel types explained and the Mini LED backlight entry.
